CUP HORSES IN TRAINING. (B* TBLIiOHAPH. —PKESS ASSOCIATION.] , CHBISTCHURCH, Saturday. The weather has been very dry lately. A few light showers of rain Vfell $o-day, but not enough to lay the dust. Trainers would welcome a downpour to soften the ground. The cup candidates. Foo Chow and Royal Stan, have had a couple of spins an company this week. On Thursday they went a mile and a-<juarter in 2m. 12 2-ss. there being very little between them. This morning their journey was a mile and a-half, which they completed in 2m 42 4-ss. Foo Chow had a slight advantage at the finish, but they ware both going on well at the end, after starting off much 100 fast, as they ran the first two furlongs in 25b. Foo Chow retains his circle of . admirers, and he gained some fresh oneg when he won the Bangiora Cup last Monday. In that race Hoyal Star finished a long way- back, but his connections expect him ta do much better in the New Zealand Cup next Saturday. Cupidon looks well, but he has not been set any Bevere tasks since his return from Australia.. This morning he went seven furlongs in lm 31s, and.he has done nothing much faster. In spite of having done a lot of work in Sydney, it" scarcely seems like the wind up of a cup preparation. Many Kittle will not be a starter in the cup\ but will run in the Stewards' Handicap. Muraahi and Equitable, two cup candidates, who have arrived from the North Island, do not look up to the best standard, and it will be surprising if either of them wins. Penitent is not coming to Riccarton for the meeting. He has goae into J. W. Lowe's stable at Trentham, and he may be tried over hurdles. The imported mare Glentruin, who is a candidate for honours in the Stewards' Handicap, is shaping attractively in her work, and she appears to have thriven on the racing she went through at Wingatui I and Trenthftm respectively. I Epitaph, who is in great hearty rattled off a brilliant half-mile this morning, when I The Hawk went five furlongs really well. >. This pair and Rational, who only arrived to-day. are the popular fancies for the Stewards' Handicap. WELLINGTON. Saturday. R D.' O'Donnel left, for the South to- ' night with Ralston. King of Hearts. Solfanello, Blackmail, and The Emperor. The stable will not be represented at Ellerslie. Trainer T. F. Qumlivah has also gone -South with Royal Bet. Ma Boughal. Bcion, Roseworthy. and a two-year-old. On Tuesday morning Royal Box galloped a mile and a-Quarter in time which the. local trainers consider equalled the track effort of Sinapi* prior to the latter's winning the New Zealand Cup. On Thursday morning Roval Box and Gazeworthy worked on the tan over fix furloncs. the former being a couple of lengths in front at the finishing post. Another-horse that did a great work-out over five furlongs on tho grass on Tuesday morning was The Hawk, who was credited Jrith lm Is for the distance* which, is v»ry ait ioi Ttsatham. ~'

A further 'addition tm made on Saturday to the list o£ English-bred horses in Auckland by" the arrival of the steamer -Middleeex from Liverpool., which brought out the five-year-old horse' Great Fun (by Great Sport—Jean's Folly), and Fraisette, a, three-rrear-old filly by V alens-Fraiee. The horses, T/ho were imported by Dr. W. C. Rins, were landed on Saturday and tnken to *£llers-.ie, where they will be isolated for a. period to conform with the conditions laid down by the Stock Department. A.R.C. SPRING MEETING. Doric, Nighttime, and Hyginas came home in that order after a bout over six furlongs, the latter toiling in the rear. Totara Jack. Hokemai, Silverton, and Pitts-worth jumped off at the sod* -wall for a run over the steeplechase course. Pittsworth struck one of the post and rail fences on the hill, and was pulled up. This was, however, only due to some portion, of his gear be'oring disarranged, which, on being adjusted, he completed the course. Glenotus, Tenacious, and Never Despair were also exercised over the steeplechase course. Never Despair fell at the stone wall entering the straight, and his rider. Percival, had a shoulder dislocated. Rereton, who was schooled alone, got as far as the first post and rail fence, at the top of the -hill, in negotiating which he feu, and his rider, Stanaway, suffered a broken collarbone.
