POLICE COURT NEWS.
INTERFERENCE WITH WOMAN YOUNG MAN SENT TO GAOL. An incident on the waterfront on Tuesday night resulted in the appearance of C'arence George Pearce, aged 28, in the Police Court yesterday before Mr. W. Poynton, S.M., charged with drunkenness and with having assaulted a woman. Accused denied tho second charge. Captain Arthur Pearce, of the Auckland Launch and Towboat Company, who was in the -vicinity of the Hobson Wharf at the time, gave evidence that he heard a woman scream and then saw her running away from a man, The latter was pursued by several persons, caught by witness, and handed over to the police. The magistrate said he would not have interference with women, and sentenced accused to seven days' imprisonment. DROVE INTO SAFETY ZONE. A fine of £5 was. imposed on Percy Balgarnie, aged 49, who failed to appear to answer a charge of having been drunk while in charge of a motor-car. Evidence was given that defendant ran into the raised safety zone at the corner of Symonds Street and Karangahape Road. BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. Practically all the by-law cases dealt with arose from minor breaches. A youth, H. Murgatroyd, was fined £2 for driving a motor-car past a stationary tramcar in Symonds Street, and £1 for driving without a certificate of competency, and costs amounting to 16s. For failing to stop his vehicle when directed by a constable on duty at an intersection C. Treweek was fined £1 and lis costs. A similar penalty was imposed on H. May for driving without lights. Myer Robinson was j fined 10s and lis costs for riding a motori cycle in Ponsonby Road without lights. Failure to have the tail lights of their j cars burning resulted in E. W. Cowden, I C. Cavanagh, W. Fish, A. Horspool, W. iC. Leys, and S. K. Tipping each being fined 10s and costs. H. A. Steele was fined 10s and lis costs for cutting tho corner, while Wing Hang was fined £1 and 16s costs for leaving his cart not parallel to the footpath and with the wheel unchained.
