WAR DEBTS TO AMERICA
POSITION OF BRITAIN. GO-BETWEEN FOR ALLIES. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Aug. 25. British official circles, commenting on the American statement relating to the British debt, point out that after America's entry into the war Britain borrowed from the United States £879,000,000 sterling and lent her other Allies £897,000,000 Without the demands from her Allies for assistance the loans from America would not have been necessary. *It should not be forgotten that ' early ip _ 1918 Britain pressed the United States to relieve her of the responsibility, of financing the Allies, offering in return to finance her own expenditure in America, but the United States would not accept.
