AUCKLAND ORPHANS' CLUB.
FORTNIGHTLY GATHERING. The fortnightly gathering of the Auckland Orphans' Club, held in the Scots Hall on Saturday evening, was largely attended. The vice-president, Mr. W. J. Napier, presided. The guests included ;tMajor A. E. Belcher, Commissioner of the British Empire Exhibition, and Mr. F. W. Bates, secretary to the commission; Mr. J. W. Collins, secretary to the Department of Industries and Commerce; Mr. E. W. Dalton, British Tr>da Commissioner ; Mr. C. Adair, Secretary ot the Gisborne Savage Club; Sir Thos. Mackenzie and Mr. Clutha Mackenzie, M.P. In the course of observations in connection with" his recent trip to England and the Continent, the chairman emphasised the need of vigilance in order to maintain the unity of the Empire. [: ~' Major Belcher said that 500 young men from Australia were being sent; to study conditions elsewhere, because it was considered likely they would be the leaders of thought, ib pontics and other matters, in the coming generation. Possibly something similar could be done in New Zealand to enable many of her sons to study the various propositions in different parte of the Empire. Sir Thomas Mackenzie also responded on behalf of himself and hia son, Mr. Clutha Mackenzie.
