BOROUGH COUNCILS.

DEVONPORT. The Devonport Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. H. S. W. King, presiding. There were also present: Messrs. S. W. Luxford, C. L. Stevenson, R. T. Michaels. A. Bartley, E H- Little, and A. V, Fraer. , , . The Mayor reported on his recent visit to Wellington, where he attended a meeting of the Municipal Association executive. Among the subjects discussed were the raising of loans without polls, provided unem- ! ployed men were engaged on the works; loans to meet antecedent liability; taxation of municipal enterprises: the Main Highways Bill; removal of refuse; and other matters. The Mayor said there was no provision in the association's rules for the payment of delegates', travelling expenses. The council decided to forward a remit to the association suggesting that the travelling expenses of delegates be paid out of the association's funds. • The handing over on Tuesday of the debentures for £25,000 in connection with the , purchase of the electricity supply under- , taking was also the subject of a report by the Mayor, who said the negotiations had been completed in a highly satisfactory mannerThe Auckland Provincial Agricultural and Educational Committee sought the council's assistance in endeavouring to establish a farm school at Ruakura. It was decided to make the requested recommendations. Mr. C. L. Stevenson was appointed the council's repiesent&tive on the committee, : Permission was granted to the War Memorial. Committee to erect the memorial on the site submitted. Tho matter of appointing a resident engineer was referred to the council-in committee. . ~ ■ A, ' BIRKENHEAD. The Birkenhead Borough Council met lost evening. There were present the Mayor, Mr. J. W. Court, and Messrs. A. Bartlett, J.'. Smith, R. Taylor, A. Turner, P. H. Hayward, L. R. L. Moller. F. W. McCowan, A. Hadfield. and E, C. Walton. . The Lake Tafovpuna Board of Control intimated that the weed dragged out of the lake would be burned, so that no pollution of the water would ensne therefrom., : Representatives of the Birkdale Fruitgrowers' Association and the Birkenhead Progressive League .are to be invited to confer with.the counod on Saturday.
