COMMUNITY SINGING.
rr <» . YESTERDAY'S " HAPPY HOUR." TOWN HALL AND NEWTON. The inauguration of community, singing in suburban csnlreu has had thiJ effect of greatly lessening the crowds at the Town Hall, attendancemerely comfortably filling the hall and galleries instead of crow dung every available inch of space in like building as kitherEo. There 'were many spare seats throughout the singing hour, so that no complaints should be made for fch'e rest of the season on the score of inability to take part in the weekly 'Vsing-ttong'V through lack of accommodation. Reference was made yesterday by the chairman, Mr. R. 8. Abel, to file fact that the community-singing season was now drawing to a close, and ail who could should take advantage of the remaining hoiiro.of happiness and sing with a willi not forgetting to pats on the reflection -'of thiiir happiness to others less happy, torougla the medium of the collec-' tion boxes at the door. The singing was very hearty, Mr. Marshall Johnston and Mr. E. Waters leading the singtra in a number of old favourites and one or two new choruses. Hearty cheers wer«> given for and accompanist at the close of the gathering, which dispersed after the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." 'The attendance at the King's Theatre, Newton, was a record one for the district, stalls and gallery being filled. The Rev. Jasper Calder again won high raea-> sure- of success as song-leader., Mrs. Dorothy Williams proving a popular and efficient accompanist? Community singing will be held at the Broadway Theatre, Newmarket, to-mor-row, commencing at 12.30 p.m.
