RAILWAY FACILITIES.
TOWN PLATFORM WANTED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COBBESPONDENT.J Tuesday.
At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce last night, the chain.ian, Mr. B Mann, moved : ''That the chamber appoint a committee to draw up a petition for public signature requesting the Government, in view of the long distance to the proposed railway station from the business area, to erect a platform in the vicinity of the Strand so that incoming passengors may alight; also, that facilities be provided whereby intending travellers may obtain tickets at and depart from the said platform for tho South." Messrs. C. A. Hillc and C. Iv. MacMillan, speaking for the people in the southern portion of the borough, strongly supported the motion. Colonel Ward said that for years to come 99 railway passengers out of every 100 would get off at a platform near the town in preference to getting off at the Spit. Mr. B. C. Robbins spoke in support of the motion, and said there was a good site for a platform station on the borough endowment near the end of Devonport Road.
The motion was carried and the president, secretary, and Colonel Ward were appointed a committee to give effect to it.
Mr. A. J. Mirriclees reported that a deputation had waited on Mr. F. S. Dyson, district engineer, with a request that the timetable of the train leaving Matata for Mount Maunganui on steamer days be altered from 1 p.m. to 2.15 p.m., and Mr. Dyson had agreed to the request. The question of establishing a Morton dehydrating plant in the district was discussed, and the following motion adopted: "That the projetb has the entire sympathy of the chamber, which is prepared to, assist, in. any way which may bo suggested by the Provisional Committee set up at a public meeting last week, and that Messrs. C. A. Hille, J. G. Green, C. E. Gibberd, and the secretary be appointed a committee to work in conjunction with the Provisional Committee." It was decided that Mr. D. Grant, who is visiting Wellington, be authorised by the chamber to ask for a subsidy toward the cost of establishing a dehydrating plant.
