EAST COAST RAILWAY.
WORK FROM TANEATUA.
TO TAURANGA IN 3 YEARS. [BY. TELEGRAPH. —PBESS ASSOCIATION.] TANEATUA. Wednesday.
Another move forward, on the East Coast-Bay of Plenty Main Trunk railway was made to-day when, after 20 years' expectancy, the people of TaneaUia saw an actual, start made with the railway work in the town, 91 miles from Waihi. The Public Works Department has carried the railhead to Awakeri, six miles from Whakatane, with which a railway connection will be made running south from Awakeri. About six miles of formation is ready, and about five miles more of difficult work will bring the line to the Whakatane River opposite the township of Taneatua. The department is now. building from'the township westward, one and a-half miles to the river, to meet the other work. The railway bridges will soon be put in hand. About three years work will see trains able to run from Tauranga 80 miles distant. The' first sod on the new work was turned to-day by Mr. Morrison, one of the oldest settlers in, the locality. The township was en. fete and a picnic was held to celebrate tho event.'
