DEATH OF OLD COLONIST. MK. EDWAitD RHODES. Another of tha pioneers of Auckland Province, Mr. Edward RhocV' . passed awisy yesterday at the ripe age o' ".">. Mr. Rhodes, who was a native of Yorkshire, arrived in New Zealand in 1854, and remained in the Auckland district ever since. He was one of the first to take up land at the Razcrback, which was then.on the outskirts cf settlement. He was, indeed, forced to leave his farm during the dangevous days of the Maori war. Over 40 years ttgo Mr. Rhodes bought a farm at Taru*here, which he occupied until his retirement about 1909, w.hen he came to live ab Epsom. Mr. Rhodes took an active interest in the public affairs of each district in which he. . lived, and served on road boards, school and church committees, and was connected with many instivai ons promoting social welfare. Mr. Frederick Bunter Clapcott, who died at Hamilton the other day, at the age of 87, hid been a colonist for nearly 70 years. He arrived at Buoedin in the ship Garnatic in 1853, and he and, his "brother, Mr. Henry Clapcott, took up, land in Southland, Some years late;.' he moved to Auckland, wbsre "he resided for over 50 years, going to Hamilton three years ago.
