THE CLEANING OF FISH.
PREMISES IN THE CITY. INTERESTS OF HEALTH. An inspection of places in the city where fish is cleaned or cured was recently made by Mr. C T. Haynes, chief sanitary inspector to the City Council, in view of the fact that fish-cleaning and fish-curing are now "offensive trades" within the meaning of the Health Act and under a by-law can be carried on only at premises registered by the council. Reporting on his inspection to the council Inst evening Mr. Haynes said be was convinced that in the interests of public health the work must be discontinued in the majority of places. Before taking any definite action it was advisable that consideration should be given by the council as to the provision of facilities for cleaning and smoking fish for the retailers, or time allowed them to make other arrangements. In any case itf was his intention not to proceed wiih registration, of the present places, if the council approved, until next December, the date v fixed for registration. He understood that a wharf was to bo provided by the Harbour Board at some time, near Campbell's Point, for trawlers, and consequently the proper place for all cleaning and smoking of fish would bo in that locality. However, unless this work could be expedited the question of how to deal with existing pre» mises presented considerable difficulties. The report was received, the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, saying that the chief point was that nothing was required to bo done in the way of registration until next December- It would be necessary for the council to consider shortly the whole position in regard; to the fish market.
