CITY AND COUNTRY INTERESTS.
Preparations in connection, with the Auckland Winter Show, which will be opened on Tuesday, arc almost completed. A small army of workmen is engaged fitting up the spaces in the' three large shfds on the Central Wharf which have been allotted to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association and the Industrial Association for the show. Large spaces on the wharf between the sheds have also been enclosed, bringing the total space available for exhibits to 80,000 ft. The show has thus assumed exceptionally large dimensions, and will afford ample opportunity for a magnificent display of the products of the primary and secondary industries of the province. A distinctive feature of previous winter shows has been the district courts, in which the primary products of the- various sections of the far-stretching province are exhibited. At. this years show courts from North Auckland and Raglan will occupy an area of 600 sq. ft., in which ! will be displayed the agricultural, mmeral. and industrial resources of the respective district*. The exhibits of butter and cheese, in the production of which Auckland has become pre-eminent in the j dairying world, will form an important section of tlio show. Other important sections will include the displays of roots, agricultural produce, honey, forestry, fla*, and home industries. Provision has also been made, for numerous competitions in various.branches of art, needlework, and educational subjects. There will also be essay competitions for pupils of the primary and secondary schools, the prizes for which are I being provided bv the Industrial Association. The subject for the primary • schools' essay is " The Exhibit I Like Beet, and Why." For the secondary schools' essay the subject is " The Value to New Zealand of Secondary Industries." . ; The co-operation of the Industrial Asso- | ciation -idto the Agricultural and Pastoral : Association in promoting this year s W T inter Show is a gratifying indication , of the welding of city and country inter- I ests which are inseparably" associated in industrial activities. This participation I in a common effort to display the fruits of j the whole of the industries of the pro- i vince ia the first occasion on which city and country have combined for such purpose, and the result is confidently expected, to mark a new era in winter exhibition activities in Auckland. The industrial and trades display will be the finest ever staged at a exhibition, and f will be a revelation to many citizens of j the industrial activities of the city. Special arrangements have been made | to entertain the large crowdß who will | attend the show during next week. Or- , chestra,! music will be rendered each afternoon, and in the evenings the Garrison ; Artillery Band will be in attendance. During the evenings Scottish and Irish dancing competitions will be held, as well as tugs of war between various athletic bodies and college teams. Maori pupils from St. Stephen';* School will also provide a unique entertainment, which will include some highlv popular hakas and other distinctive features. The educational j features of the show will include lectures by experts on subjects of special importance to producers, A demonstration of wool skirting and packing, and instruction bv members of the State Forest Service.
