UNITED STATES TARIFF.
HIGHER DUTIES ON MEAT. INCREASES BY SENATE. A. and N.Z. NEW YORK, June 28. The Tariff Committee of the Senate increased the various meat and cattle duties fixed by the House of Representatives. The duty on cattle weighing 10501b. was raised from 1£ cents to 2 cents per lb., on cattle above 10501b. from 2to cents per lb,, and on fresh beef and veal from 2to 34 cents per lb. The duty on sheep and goats was fixed at two dollars a head instead of one cent, per lb. as the House provided. The duty on fresh mutton was raised from Hto cents per lb. The changes were carried only after a violent partisan debate, in which Democrats declared that .the food bill of the American people would be increased by many billions of dollars yearly.
