BRITISH BEER TAX.
REDUCTION DEFEATED, A. and N.Z. LONDON. June 27. In the House of Commons the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir B. Home, accepted an amendment to the Finance Bill halving the duty on intoxicants supplied to clubs. Subsequently an amendment, was moved to reduce the duty on beer from £5 to £3 10s a. barrel. Sir R. Home said that this would involve an addition of one shilling to the income (ax. In a prolonged debate speakers urged that the duty should be reduced in view of the recent enormous deductions from wagefl. Tha amendment was rejected.
