CUTTING DOWN EXPENSES.
WHANGAREI HARBOUR. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI. Friday. The Whangarei Harbour Board last night decided to merge the harbourmaster's work in that of the engineer owing to the high cost of tho harbourmaster's department. It was suggested that tho harbourmaster could bo offered other work under the board tho engineer arrange to include tho harbourmaster's duties in his department until such time as the shipping warranted appointing an official pilot.
