MERCANTILE CADETS.

In connection with tho manning of various ships with cadets, a scheme suggested by His Kxcelleney ]*>rd Jcllicoo is now being followed. The idea is to train as ordinary sailors, boys who will later become officers und captains of the mercantile marine, thus placing marines on an altogether different footing and standard from that established by the former method adopted. It haa been realised by many in the various ports visited by these boats that, some provision should be made for the entertainment of the cadets who are serving their lime as sailors. With this object, in view the Auckland girls' branch of the Navy League gave a dance in the Yacht Club's rooms Jast week, when the cadets of the. Mnkalla were entertained, and another in St. Sepulchre's Hall, when the cadets from tho Carpentaria were guests wit.li the MakaHa's cadet*. On the Sunday the boys were, taken for a motor lour through interesting parts of the city, and on another afternoon and evening they spent, a »erv pleasant time as tho guests of Mrs. A. M. Ferguson, Manukau Road.
