POWER HOUSE PLANT.

— »■ NEW ECONOMIBER INSTALLED A new economiser has been installed at the City Council's power house in Hobson Street and will be brought into use to-day. It replaces one that has been in use for 20 years. The economiser is used for utilising waste gases which go up the 3 chimney after heating water. By its use J about 20 per cent, is saved in fueL It . is a simple device and is composed of a • large iron chamber in which are fitted 1 360 tubes. The tubes are filled with water and the waßte gases forced into ' the chamber raise the heat of the water 6 to 212 degrees if necessary. All work in ' connection with the erection of the . economiser was done by the council's . Hobson Street steam and electrical staff. , The .total weight of the chamber is 48 '. tons,' and it bad to be taken through , the dynamo room during the time all the '. machinery there was working. As some n of the sections weighed eight tons it was I remarkable that the work was carried e out without accident, owing to the narrow n ' places-through which they had to be i, taken. The dismantling of the old economiser and the erection of the new one was completed in the expedition time of 21 days.
