ACCIDENTS AT SCHOOL.
QUESTION OF LIABILITY. The question of the liability of the Auckland Education Board in connection with accidents befalling school children ■while receiving instruction was brought to the attention of the board yesterday by a letter from the headmaster of the Maungawhau School, Mr. P. J- Ohlson, stating that a pupil in the agricultural class had recently run a pitchfork through his hand. His parents had had to pay fire guineas for medical attention, and while not making any claim, they wished to know whether there was any board fund from which financial assistance might be granted. The chairman, Mr. E. C. Banks, stated that insurance against this kind of accident was impracticable, »nd there was no special fund irom which assistance could be granted. At the same time, the boy had received his injury while receiving instruction, and in view of the circumstances, .he mo\*d that the board contribute £2 10s toward the doctor's fee. This suggestion was adopted unanimously, although it was made clear that the contribution was merely an act of grace, and in no way an acknowledgment of liability.
