FARMERS IN POLITICS.
Sir.-- The letter in the Herald of March 29 by "Small Cockie " is an attempt to belittle such worth)- men as Messrs. Colbeck, Ross, Harding, Boddie. and DuxfieJd. His statement that these men no more represent the farming com munity Mian " the three tailors" represented the people of England is contrary to fact, and this is the expressed opinion of scores and scores of settlers, especial lv the men on smaller holdings. " Smail Cockie" wants to know how manv branches of the Farmers' Union have become defunct. Well, 21 years ago I inaugurated in the Thames Valley the Matatoki, Wharepoa, and Netherton branches, and they arc all still going strong. As to a ).- -political union, well, if "Small Cockie" gets his way the farmers will remain stagnant, as they have done in the past. The fault of the farmers is that they do not recognise their own claims. A. K. Maxwell. Matatoki.
