AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB. AUTUMN MEETING CONCLUDED. NITA BELL WINS LEADING RACE. The Auckland Trotting Club's Autumn Meeting was concluded yesterday, »nd the weather being in full keeping with the season, there was an assemblage estimated at 16,000 at Alexandra Park. From first to last everything connected with the meeting worked mo3t smoothly, and with a total absence of anything of a jarring character the outing proved one of the most enjoyable days associated with the Epsom ground. The stipendiary stewards, Mr. T. H. Davey (chief), and Mr. A. ©, Mabee, were both prosent, but there was not a single incident calling for their intervention. The totalisator receipts for the day amounted to £46,213, which represents an increase of £6736, compared with tho corresponding day last year. The total investments for the meeting amounted to £91.097 10s, against £86,220 10s last year—an increase , of £5877. The leading event of the programme, the Prince of Wales Handicap, brought out a field of eight, Mr. G. Paton furnishing the favourite with Nit* Bell. The brackettod I pair Wild Briar and Man-o'-War. were next in demand, and the other contestants were supported in the following order: —Comedy Chiei. Gold Girl, Woodvale, and Grand Voyago. The race gave rise to a stirring contest. William the First had' most to say in the early stages of the contest. Comedy Chief, who went to the front three furlongs from home, flattered the hopes of his admirers by showing tho way into the, straight, and he looked like a winner at the middle of the terraces, but hero Nita 8011, who had been travelling in groat stylo from tho head of the straight, challenged, and the Gold Bell mare beat her chestnut rival by a neck amidst a ecene of intense- excitement. Arthur Julian, v.ho steered Nita Bell, was never seen to bettor advantage, and the warm cheer that came to him whon he brought the bay m. re back to tho enclosure was well doeerred. As lie first four horses were only separated by somethins like half a length, the handicappei, Mr. F. W. Edwards, wis warmly congratulated on his admirablo adjustment. The Adams Memorial Handicap, which carried a 100 guinea gold cup, presented by Mrs. S. A. Adams, brought out a fine field of seventeen contestants, and Mi. A. F. Freeth furnished the winner with Ballin, who won his raco in good style. Shortly after the race, the handsome cup was presented in the enclosure to Mr. Freeth, by the president of the Auckland Trotting Clnb, Mr. J. Rowe, and in doing so, he made fitting reference to the etrone part wh.ch the late Mr. Adams had played in lay.ng tho foundation of tho sport at Alexandra Park. Mrs. Adams had donated the cup as a memento to her late husband who would be long remembered for the many good qualities he displayed. Cheers were given for Mr. Freeth, and also for Mrs. Adams.
