PAID UNDER AWARD RATE
PICTURE THEATRE EMPLOYEE. A charge of having paid an employee less than the award rato was brought by the inspector of awards, Mr, J. Hollows, against W. E. Winship (Mr. Denniston), manager of the Pamell picture theatre, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Mr. Hollows said that defendant had employed a Mrs. Shiells as ticket-taker from July 31, 1921, to Decembor 2, 1921, at 12s 6d a week, for six performances a week, instead of 24s a week, from tho latter date, to February 3, 1922, he paid her 15s ?. week, for seven performances, instead of the award rate of 28s. Mrs. Shiells was also charged with having accepted less than the award rate. About £18 lis was due to the employee, but this payment had been guaranteed. Mr. Denniston said that defendant had continued the old rate of pay when he took over the management, and even whoa he raised the pay, ho was still under the award. The employee was not aware that she was underpaid until she joined the union. The magistrate fined the employer £3, and tho employee 10s.
