VICTORIA CRUISING CLUB. ANNUAL HARBOUR RACE. IRON DUKE'S SUCCESSFUL RACE. The Victoria Cruising Club held its annual regatta on the Waitemata Harbour on Saturday afternoon. A light north-east wind, accompanied by heavy rain, prevailed at the start of the raoea, but toward the finish the weather cleared up, the wind freshening to a hard breeze. During the afternoon the half deckers Gannet, Waitui, and Lilac, and the open boat Eileen B. capsized, all the crews being picked up. Record entries were received for all classes, and the racing was hard and interesting. The most important event on the programme was the race for the 14ft. one-design class, in which the Iron Duke, owned by His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Lord Jellicoe, was called upon to defend the Burns Cup which she won last year. In the absence of His Excellency the Iron Duke was Bailed by Mr. 6. Bailey and after a very exciting race she retained the trophy, beating five challengers. The Iron Duke also won the race for her class which was sailed in conjunction with the Bums Cup. The dredge Maui was used as flagship and was well patronised. The officials for tho day were:—Starter, Mr. A. Deacon; judge, Mr. T. L. Thompson; timekeepers, Messrs. 0. Johnson, W. Matthews, and P. Boonstra. Details of the racing are :— Manurere Wins Launch Handicap. The race tor launches brought out 17 competitors, which were sent away to a good start at 2.20 p.m. Countess crossed the Jine first, closely followed by lone, Lorraine, Britta, Sunray, Flora. Ella, and Rosalie, with the rest of the boats handy, except Jean Grey and Avillion, which were ovei 3m late. Lorraine went into the lead shortly after the start, and once in that position she was never headed. On the run across to Bayswater, Britta passed lone and Countess, while Sunray also improved her position. Passing the flagship on the run up the harbour for the Chelsea mark, Lorraine. Britta, Sunray, and lone had a long lead from Ella, Counteßß, Ngarena, Red Bird, and Flora, while further astern came Bcsalie, Manurere, Thelma, Afazatove, Jean Grey and Nukumare. The result was: Manurere, 1; Sunray, 2; Ella, 3. Yachting Events Keenly Contested. The competitors in the race for keel yachts were Speedwell, Queenie, Rostless, Thistle, Wairiki, Peri, Eulalie, Gloriana, Moutere, Mizpah, Cynthia, and Vanora. From a good start Restless crossed the line first, with Queenie, Speedwell, Cynthia, Gloriana, and Peri following in that order. The rest of the boats were all handy, except Mizpah and Vanora, whioh were both late. The first board saw Queenie head the fleet, and on the beat out to the Rangitoto Channel she opened up a big lead, which she maintained on the run back to the harbour again. Speedwell was first of the others round the channel mark, Restless second, Thistle third, and Gloriana fourth. Passing the flagship, Queenio was leading Restless Dy over seven minutes, the latter being a little over a minute ahead of Speedwell, which wag racing with her big trysail. Thistle followed less than a minute astern of Speedwell, and then came Moutere, Gloriana, and Eulalie in that ordor. On the beat from the Pile beacon Speedwell and Restless had a great "go," the latter crossing the line 4s ahead of her smaller rival. The finishing times were:— Queenie (scr), 4h 50m 13a; Restless (3m), 5h lm 13s; Speedwell (2}m), 5h lm 235; Thistle (3}m), Bh 3m 48s; Peri (61m), 5h 15s 18s; Gloriana (8m), oh lCm 495; Eulalie (8m), 5h 23m 255. The result wsb: Queenie, 1: Restlesß, 2; Speedwell, 3. Wairiki, Moutere, Cynthia, Vanora, and Mizpah did not finish. Seven boatß started in the race for 26footors. Getting the best of the start, Waiter* 11. drew away from the rest of the competitors, and led them round the course. Starlight occupied second position and Omatere third. After hauling on the wind for the beat in the finishing line, Starlight lost several minutes through coming in contact with an open boat off St. Mary's Beach. The finish ng times were: Waitere 11. (ecr), 4h 69m 355; Starlight (6m), 5h 4m 0s; Omatere (7m), 6h. 11m 225; Sadie Urn), 5h 18m 325; Mistletoe (16m), 5h 32m 51a; Why Not (30m), 6h 34m 438; Spray (9m), 5h 48m 3s, The result was: Starlight, 1; Waitere 11., 2; Omatere, 3. Mermin did not finish. Races for Other Classes. The following boats started in the race for 22-footers:—Marie, Venus, Mowai, Waima, Rona, Forest Gold, Dulcie, and Eoucn. Marie was first away, closely followed by Valeria, Venus, and Mowai, with the rest strung out astern. The leaders beat out to the channel in. the order stated, and when tho flagship was reached the order wan still the same. After hauling on the wind again, however, Mowai replaced Venus. The finishing timos were:—Marie (scr), 5h 25m 8s; Valeria (14m), 5h 28m 6s; Mowai (9m), 5h 30m 38s; Venus (4m), oh 35m 14s; Forest Gold aim), 6h 36m 355; Rona (13m). 5h 44m 525; Waima (15m), 5h 50m 295. . The result was: Mowai, 1; Marie, 2; Valeria, 3. Class N, SO-footer's, brought out Ngawa, Ngaro, Waiapu, and Gloaming. Waiapu got tho best of tho start, and next to her came Lorna, Gloaming, Ngaro, and Ngawa in that order. Lorna passed Waiapu on the beat out to the lco mark, and maintained her lead for the remainder of the course, finishing a long way ahead of. the other boats, The finishing times were:—Lorna (10m), 5h 47ra 475; Ngawa (2ra), 5h 48m 555; Ngaro (2m), 6h 49m SGs; Waiapu (scr), 6h 61m 9s. The result was: Lorna, lj Ngawa, 2; Ngaro, 3. Gloaming did not complete the course. Class S, 18-footers, was sent away to a good start, Tin crossing the line first, closely followed by Colleen, Secret, Waitui, Mascotte, Lilac, and Atangatai, with Gannet, Toss, Up, Ben Bolt, Sea Belle, Ventura and Lanoia a little further astern. Secret took the lead after rounding the first mark, followed by Colleen. These two boats drew away from the fleet on the run up the harbour, • and when the Southern Cross was reached Colleen passed Secret. After hauling on the wind however Secret regained her position, and in the meantime Atangatai ran irto third plaoe. On the second round Waitui, Lilac, and Gannet capsised, while Ben Bait collided with the 26-footer Starlight. Tho finishing times were—Secret (scr), 4h 29m 465; Colleen (sm). 4h 33m 355; Atangatai (Bm). 4h 40m 14s: Ventura (6m), 4h 45m 9s: Toss Up (13m), 4h 50m,445. The result was: —Colleen 1, Secret 2, Atangatai 3. The rest of the boats gave up. Wins lor Sea Dell and Valet. Thirtoen boats faced the starter in the race for the 14ft. square bilge class. Dixie was first away, but had a mishap shortly afterwards and gave up. Sea Sprite was next away and then camo Early Dawn, Sea Nymph, Sea Pixie, and Sea More in that order. Sea Deil gradually overhauled the leaders, and when the flagship was reached she was in charge. Sea Sprite was second boat, Soa Buhblo third, and Sea Spook fourth Sea Doil continued her lead in the second round, but after the boats had brought their sheets aboard Sea Gnome greatly improved her position and finally finished second. The times were:—Sea Doil /3m 13s). 4h 48m 38s; Sea Gnome (7m behind), 4h 50m 2s; Sea Sprite (2m 40s), 4h 50in 15b: Sea Spook (2m 30s), 4h 55m 58s; Sea Bubble (3m 30s). 4h 57m 235; Sea Shell (3m 19b), 5h 4m 375; Sea Pixie (2m). 5h 5m 295; Sea Hawk (4m), 5h 9m Is. The result was: Sea Deil 1, Sea Sprite 2, Sea Gnome 3. There wero 10 competitors in class T, 14ft., handicap boats. Silver Link led the way ovei the line, with Some Girl. Rover, Red Wing, and Whizz Bang next in order. On the lead across the harbour Valet took oharge and opened up a substantial lead which she kept throughout. Silver Link was second boat passing the .flagship on the completion of the first round, Rover third. Arawa fourth and Omaki fifth. On reaching the Northcote mark, however. Omaki ran into second place, with Red Wing, Arawa, and Silver Link next in order. The finishing times were:—Valet (scr), 5h 6m 335; Red Wing (2m). 5h 17m 51s; Arawa (2}m), 5h 19m 20s; Omaki (61m), Bh 19m 255: Silver Link (2|rnj 5h 27m 12s; Cariad (7m). 5h 28m 48s. Tho result was: Valet 1, Omaki 2, Red Wing 3. Iron Duke Retains Suras Gup. Tho race for the 14ft one-desijn boats brought out Snipe, Shirley, Meteor, Iron Duke, Viper, Ola 111., Rex, Edna, Resolute, Nyria, Betty and Joan. This event was sailed in conjunction with tho Burns Cup challenge contest. In the cup race Iron Duko was the defender, and the chalkngors were Ola 111., Edna, Nyria, Betty nnd Joan. One of the best starts of the day was effected, all the boats crossing tho line within a few seconds of one another, except Edna, which was Ijm late. Iron Duke was first away, closely followed by Shirley, Snipe Nyrfa, Resolute, Joan. Betty, Ola 111.. Meteor, Viper, Rex, • and Edna. Iron Duke continued her lead until approaching the first mark where she was passed by Ola 111. The order rounding this mark was: Ola 111.,.1r0n Duke, Nyria, Joan, Snipe, Meteor, Shirley, Viper, Resolute Betty, Rex; Edna. The lead acrosa the "harbour to mark in Shoal Bay saw Ola 111. still ahead, with Nyria second, Iron Duke third, Joan fourth, and Snipe fifth. Sninnakers were set for. the run up to the Chelsea mark, and on getting round Iron Duko overhauled Nyria. Ola 111. did well on the beat to the flagship, while Iron Duke drew.away from Nyria.. Passing this mark and the completion of the^first round the order was: Oia HL. Iron Dole, Nyria, • i

Snipe, Joan, Meteor-Viper, Betty. Shirley, and Resolute. Ola HI. continued nor lead on the run up the harbour, and was still ahead when St. Mary's Beach was reached. At this stage, however, Iron Duke overhauled Ola lIL. crossing the line 31s in front of her rival. The finishing times were: Iron Duke. 4h 54m 495; Ola DL, 4h 55m 20s: Nyria. 4h 56m 9s; Snipe, 4h 56m 51s: Joan, 4h E6m 58s; Viper, 5h Ora 31s; Betty, Eh lm 18s; Meteor, 6n 2m 10s; Besolute, 5h 2m 555. The result was: fron Duke. 1; Ola DL. ij Nyria, 3. Iron Duke also wins the Burns i/up, which she retains for another 12 months. POWER-BOAT ASSOCIATION. The cruise in company to Putiki Bay, Waiheke, arranged by the. New Zealand Power-boat Association, which was to have taken place on Saturday, was postponed owing to the unfavourable weather, ihe fixture will be held later in the season.
