HIS 80th BIRTHDAY. [FROM ODE OWN CORRESPONDENT.] LONDON, Jan. 10. On January 7 Professor A. W. Biekerton joined the ranks of vigorous octogenarians, ind medical opinion gives him the comforting assurance that he has the heart Df a man of 45, with arteries still soft Hid a pulse strong. But he is advised steadily to bear in mind the fact that ho is 80, and so curb any impulse to overexertion. On this interesting anniversary ie was pleasantly entertained by Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Hornibrook, and he wag presented by Sir James Allen with a purse ;ontaining £43 10s, subscribed to by old New Zealand admirers now in England. A former student of the professor at Canterbury College, Sir Ernest Ruthcr'ord, sending a contribution and regretting his inability to be present, wrote: "As one of his old students and friends, [ am very glad to see that this occasion is to be properly celebrated as a mark not only of our esteem and affection, but jf our general belief in the value of his scientific work, to which he has devoted fiimself so indefatigably." A letter of appreciation and a telegram of regret at his inability to be present came from His Highness Prince Jhalawar, vice-president d£ the Astronomical Society of India, who is now at Oxford.
