OBITUARY.
HON. W. D. H. BAILUE, M.LC; • 1 SOLDIER AND POLITICIAN.[bt teieobaph.—press association.] WELLINGTON. Saturday. The death if. announced of the Hon.' W. D. H. Baillie, M.LC, aged 95. The Hon. William Douglas Hall Baillie was the last life-member of the Legislative Council. He was born in New Brunswick, where his father, who fought in the Battle of Waterloo, was. commissioner of Crown lands. After studying a' Woolwich he joined the 24th "Regiment, and served in the Punjab campaign, being promoted to captain. On coming to Zealand he settled in the Wairan district for many years, and subsequently sold his run and resided at Picton. He was superintendent of Marlborough from August, 1861, to February, 1863, and was for about 40 years commandant of volunteers' in the Marlborough district, and a member of the Marlborough Education Board for about 30 years. His appointment as. a member of the Legislative Council was made in March, 1861, and he was Chairman of Committees in the Council from 1879 to 1902. He leaves three sons and two daughters.
