OBITUARY.
CAPTAIN C. HOPKINS, One of- the oldest masters in ihi.Nwr :'. Zealand coastal trade, Captain ft, •Ecpking, died at Auckland on Sunday, jot the last 35 years Captain Hopkins TO2 in • the service of the Northern Company, and was well known in the Bay of Plenty, as he was in the Whakatans and Opotiki trade* for ft number of years. He was born in the Tower of London in 1844, and at the age of two h« came to New ZealancT with bis father, who was a meniber of lie {M Regimen';. He went to sea at the age of 17, and served in a number of coastal vessels prior to joining the'service of the Northern Coninany in 1887. In 1918 Captain Hopkins joined the company's shore staff on the wharf. In his young days Captain Hopkins was a prominent oarsman. With Captaiu Parke? j and others he once pulled from Auckland to Mahurangi, a distance of 25 miles, and after winning a race rowed back to Auckland. He was the holder of theßoy&l Humane Society's medal for life-saving oE the Queen's Wharf over 30 yean ago. Captain Hopkins was a member of the Masonic craft. He leaves a widow, and family. His oldest son, Mr. Richard Hopkins, who was chief officer in th| Northern Company's service, uas killed on active service.
