WORKERS RENDERED IDLE.
QUESTION OF EMPLOYMENT. RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] WAIHI, Sunday. In the hope of averting distress in Waihi, in consequence of the closing down of the Grand Junction Company's battery, which will render a considerable number of workers idle for several months unless they succeed in finding employment elsewhere, the town clerk has telegraphed to the Mayor, Mr. D. Donaldson, who is in Auckland, with a view to temporary work being provided for those prepared to accept it, on the Waihi-Athenree section of the East Coast railway line. The majority of the men affected are married, and have their homes in Waihi. If the Mayor's representations should prove successful they would be able to remain in town in readiness to resume their former positions when tho battery restarts.
