TEACHERS' SALARIES.

METHOD OF REDUCTION,

"CUT" OF £10 TO £15.

A statement regarding teachers' salaries was made yesterday by the Minister for Education, the Hon. C. J. Parr. No reduction in salaries, he said, were made by the Act passed last month. That Act, however, empowered the Minister, by regulation, to reduce salaries, but such reduction could take effect only after notice in the Ga:ette.

The Minister said that, with the departmental officers, he had been engaged for the past fortnight on a scheme. He had also consulted the New Zealand Educational Institute. The scheme, as approved, would be made public and will come into operation in a few days. ~Sb. Parr added: "The scheme is a 1 Slightly graduated one, beginning at a reduction of £10 and rising to £15 as a maximum. I think teachers will be satisfied that I have done the best possible for them in the circumstances. It is with the greatest reluctance that I have had to reduce salaries at all, but I am 'up against it,' like everyone else. When tie details are announced it,' will be found that thev are much more favourable to the teachers than those apparently sup. posed by the chairman of the Education Board." These remarks, he added, applied to the nrimarv school teachers. With regard to secondary and technical school masters, the decreases will be relatively on the same plane.
