FARMERS AND POLITICS.
INAUGURATING AsCAMPAIGN.
NEXT GENERAL ELECTION.
SIX SEATS TO BE CONTESTED.
The political programme of the Auckland provincial executive of the Farmers' Union was discussed on Tuesday at a meeting; of the executive. The matter was taken in committee, but yesterday a statement relating to tho proposed political activities of tho executive was made by the provincial president of the union, M-. R B. Duxfield.
The proposal to form a farmers' political party, said Mr. Duxfield, was adopted by the last provincial conference in June and a committee was formed to arrange details in connection with a campaign at the forthcoming general election. The committee reported to tho executive on Tuesday that pending confirmation of the branches concerned it had been decided to contest six scats at the forthcoming election. The seats referred to were Bay of Islands, Marsden, Thames, Ohinemuri, Waikato and Waitomo. After discussing the report the executive had decided to appoint a leader for the farmers' political party and to mako a tentative selection of candidates for tho seat 5 it had been decided to contest. The party leader would hold meetings in the various constituencies and address delegates from tho branches interested. 'The branches would then be requested to approve of the selected candidate or select one of their own. In the event of the branches of any constituency deciding not to run a Farmers' Union candidate tho executive would take no further action in respect to that particular seat.
