SHIPPING OF PRODUCE.
Sir,—The deputy-chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board again refers to the desirability of the Harbour Board undertaking the receiving and delivering of cargo as it is done in Wellington. No doubt it would be a very good plan to have an export wharf, but as one who has had experience of the working of cargo at 'Wellington and Auckland, I can merchants and exporters that if they should adopt the Wellington practice and allow the Harbour Board to handle all cargo ihey will regret it but once. No local body can compete with private enterprise, and to eliminate the present competitive system in favour of practically Government control will be very disastrous to all concerned, except the arm/" of Harbour Board officials which the scheme woulJ create.
