AVONDALE LEAGUE. . i. ♦———— The usual fortnightly meeting of the Avondale Progressive League was held on Wednesday, Mr. Stebbing presiding. The Minister for Justice, the Hon. E. P. Lee. notified the league that a constable would be stationed at Henderson as soon as suitable premises could be acquired. This would enable' Constable Douglas to devote all his time to Avondale and vicinity. In the meantimo an additional constable would be stationed in Avondale. The Postmaster-General, the Hon. J. G. Coates, regretted that the league's application that the. local post office be opened one hour on Sundays for the receipt and despatch of telegrams could not be complied • with. The chief postmaster, Auckland, wrote stating {hat if the post boxes were erected in Aypndale all mails received by those paying for such boxes would be put in boxes and none delivered by carriers. It was decided to drop the idea of requesting boxes. A' communication from the chief postSSaster was received in regard to overcounter of letters after 6 p.m., that it might be possible to send on the Auckland afternoon mail earlier, and overcounter delivery made before 5 p.m. This was considered by the league to be of no use, and a reply directed to be sent - accordingly.
