ST. JAMES' KINDERGARTEN.

SUCCESSFUL GARDEN FETE. A garden fete in aid of the building fund of St. James' Free Kindergarten was held at the residence of Mrs. iR, Pearson, Waikouaiti, Victoria Avenue, Romuera, on Saturday afternoon. The wefl-kept gardens were dotted with stalls and sideshows which were decorated with bunting, the whole scene presenting an animuavj appearance. There was a large attendance of the public, whose liberality resulted in a sum of approximately £150 being added to the fund. The fete was opened by the Mayor, Mr. J. 13. Gunson, who spoke of the importance of kindergarteti work in the life of the community and its significance in the building up of the child's character. He stated that St. James' was the only one of four kindergartens in Auckland which did not have a building of its own. During the afternoon pupils of Miss Daphne Knight contributed several prettily-executed dances, while an enjoyable musical programme was played by the Waterside Workers' Silver Band. The ladies' committee, which is undertaking the present campaign for building funds, has already purchased a section of land in Wellington Street for the site of the new building, and between £400 and £500 remains now to be raised before the work of erection is commenced.
