NORTH AUCKLAND RAILWAY

OPERATIONS IN PROGRESS. Good progress is being made with the construction work on the North Auckland railway of the Whangarei-Waiotira section. A commencement has been made with the erection of permanent bridges over the Mangonui and Kikowhiti streams, but some difficulty is anticipated in finding suitable driving ground for piles. Should this bo speedily overcome the bridges, with tho exception of t'iio girders, ought to be completed in about four months. The Marcretu tunnel is expected to b» finished by about April. Tho construction work on tho other side of the tunnel is proceeding at a satisfactory rate. Locomotives aro now running on either sido of the Marcretu and Golden Stairs tunnels. Thcro remain two cuttings which have not yet been completed, and two streams require to bo bridged before tho sections between tho points named can be linked up.
