LIGNITE COAL DEPOSITS!

SUITABILITY FOR GASWORKS. [bi telegraph-own correspondent.] TAURANGA, Thursday. A punt load of soft 'brown /coal, taken from extensive deposits in tho western portion of tho harbour, arrived yesterday for the gasworks, which have already carried out experiments. Theso demonstrate that this lignite is suitable for manufacturing gas. The supply is said to be unlimited and, it is considered, is suitable for certain household requirements. At the annual meeting of tho Tauranga Citrus and Fruitgrowers' Association, tho report stated that tho present output docs not justify tho running of a central agency, with an office and store, but when the output reaches about 10,000 cases per annum a definite movement to establish a curirg. grading, and packing shed or depot should be made by the association. The report urged that an effort should bo mado to open up fresh markets. Tho co-operative purt basing of requisites was 1 suggested in order to secure materials at tho lowest prices. Efforts should bo made by means of competing classes and displays at horticultural shows, and in other ways, to improve tho quality of citrus fruit produced in this district. Officers for tho ensuing year wero elected as follows:—President, Mr. H. P. Bryan; secretary, Mr. D. Bonthron; committee, Messrs. J. S. Thompson, T. H. Parkinson, and H. T. Paltie. Reference was made to the hawthorn menace, and it was unanimously agreed that representations bo mado to the Tauranga Borough and County Councils, asking them to declare hawthorn a noxious weed. The cricket club has derided on tho institution of a cup competition betwocn four local clubs, including one eleven from Mount Maunganui. The opening match will bo played on Saturday between United and Town. Miss Vera Meiklc, who has resigned her position in tho town clerk's oflice, was presented on Tuesday with a gold chain and pendant by tho town clerk's and borough engineer's staffs. At a territorial parade last evening, Captain Peacock, officer commanding tho defence forces in tho district, presented Sergeant W. Denniston with tho Lady Godley Cup, which is awarded for tho highest individual score during the musketry course throughout the year. This is the second lime that tho cup has been awarded to Sergeant Denniston.
