PAPAKURA PARK.

,Sir,—Mr. Evans in bis letter published on Tuesday does not put the facts ro purchase of above quite fairly. These sections were endowments given for tho benefit of the town district, and must remain the property of tho district for all time. I admit that when they were leased some years ago tho rent was comparatively low, but what were they worth thon? Most people thought the lessee was giving far too much for them. My contention has always been that it was bad business to buy the lease, and convert a revenue-producing property into a domain when so many other equally suitable places were available. On Mr. Evans' own figures they expect a vent of £10 each for the 20 remaining sections; if so, how much would 58 sections produce ?—sufficient to pay interest and upkeep on a { domain elsewhere. If tho lease had been allowed to expire in the ordinary way-r about eight years hence, I think—what would the revenue bo then ? Worth waiting for, I venture to say. I am afraid we are all selfish and think too much of tho present, and leave the future to take 'care of itself. At the public meeting the other evening speeches were made by three gentlemen deprecating running the district into debt, raising the rates, etc. U was just such speeches as theirs that caused the water schemo to be turned down some years ago. We are still waiting for water, and it is going to cost us about four times as much as it would have then. A. Willis. Papakura, November 15, 1921.
