CITY TRAMWAY SERVICES.
IMPROVEMENT OF SYSTEM.
DETAILS BEING CONSIDERED
The city tramway services were the subject of a conference yesterday between the Mayor, Mr. J. H. Gunson, and the chairman of the Electricity and Tramways Committee of the City Council, Mr. W. J. Holdsworth Subsequently Mr. Gunson made a statement on the matter.
Important proposals for the benefit and convenience of the travelling public were, he said, being considered by the committee. These did not involve any radical alterations in the system. An announcement as to the details of the proposed changes would be made shortly. As regards the recent changes in the running of the trams, the. Mayor said they had given rise to considerable comment, but he would like the public to realise that the committee was devoting its best energies to this question. The council desired tne co-operation of citizens toward making the services as satisfactory and efficient as possible. He spoke of "the willing cooperation the council was receiving from all the men in tha tramway service. It was unreasonable, he added, to expect that the recent changes and developments should be carried out without a certain amount of friction over minor difficulties.
CONDITIONS IN " RUSH HOUR." TRAFFIC QUICKLY HANDLED. A further improvement in the new tramway arrangements during the " rush hour " was noticeable lxst evening. Although the crowds at the foot uf Queen Street did not appear to be smaller than on other days, they were taken up fairly quickly, and by 5.25 p.m. all outgoing cars except those for Dominion Road left the foot of Queen Street with standing room to spare. By 5.30 p.m. Dominion Road cars were leaving with accommodation to spare
