NORTH V. SOUTH ISLAND.
A DRAWN GAME.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WAUGANUI. Saturday. The annual Inter-Island Association football match was played this afternoon ia fine weather There was an attendance of about 3500. The ground was in excellent order. Tne teams were as follows: — North Island:—Goal: Hyder. Backs: Braithwaite and O'Neill. Halves: Mitchell. Boots (captain), and McArthur. Forwards: Ballard, Hearsey, Campbell, Thomas, and. Cusack. South Island:—Goal: Swift. Backs: Hogg and Hood. Halves: Drydea, Linley and Simpson. Forwards: Blundell. Bissett. Balk. Norman, (captain) and Shaw. The toss was won by North Island who played with the wind and sua at their back 6. Early in the gamo Norman and Balk were responsible for some combined movements, the latter goa-ling. North Island took a hand. Braithwaite kicking from well back into the goal mouth, and Campbell putt.ng the ball into the net, making the scoro one all. North went into the lead as the result of a high kick from Roots, which the goalkeeper could not reach. From a oomer conceded by North, Bissett secured from a weak kick and goaled, making the score two all. Half-time came with the score unaltered. The pace was not so fast in the eecoad spell, which was evenly contested. After a period of even play. Hearsey put North in the lead. Soon after, however, Bhmdeli put ia a good run and scored for the South. The next score came from Norman, who sent the baH home hard and high from thirty yards out. It looked as if South would retain supremacy, but a few minutes before time Hearsay goaied with a. eplendid shot, and the final score read: North Island. 4; South Island, 4. The gam© was of an even nature with the luck against the southerners. There was a chapter of accidents, four South Island players being hurt, and for the last half hour they played ten. men. The referee, Mr. W. G. HeTd. was injured about the same time, and was replaced by Mr. B. Salmond.
