TRAMWAY REGULATIONS.

CONFERENCE WITH MINISTER. [BY TE£EGSU>H.— ASSOCIATION.! WELLINGTON. Friday. Representatives of tramway undertakings throughout the Dominion'and of the Tramwaymen.'s Federation met in" conference at Parliament Buildings to-day to discuss the advisability of gazetting the tramway regulations which were framed some time ago but not put into operation Mr. F, W. Furkert, chief engineer of the Public Works Department, presided. The Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Cbates, was present. The proceedings were not open to the press. Representatives of managements outlined objections to the regulations, urging that tfie time was not yet opportune for them to- be enforced. It was contended that tramway undertakings were being conducted witu reasonable safety and although it was admitted that a certain* amount of inconvenience was caused owing- to overcrowding, it was urged that the Government would not be justified in enforcing regulations which would materially increase the expense of running various concerns. On the other hand the federation representatives expressed the opinion that the managements had had 10 years at least in which to procure extra rolling stock when money was cheap. That they had neglected to do so should not be used as an argument for allowing the preseat state of affairs to continue.
