The return match between the Australians and Essex was Legun to-day at Southend. -The weather was bright and hot, the wicket fast, and the attendance large. The teams are as follows :— Essex.—P. Perrin, H. Ashton, C. Ashton, G. M. Louden. J. G. Dixon, Franklin, H. M. Morris, F. H. Gilligan, A. C. Russell, Fane, and H. Smith. Australia.—Collins, Bardsley, Pellew, Macartney, Andrews, Mailey, Oldfield, Gregory, Mayne, Ryder. Hendry. The match is being played in the public park, the outfield of which is fairly rough, but is good in the circumstances. Earlier in the tour Essex lost by an innings. On this occasion the side has been strengthened by the inclusion of Russell and the Ashton brothers, but Douglas and J. Freeman are not playing. j Hubert Ashton is the Cambridge player | who was the first to register a century I against the visitors. Perrin won the toss and sent in Russell and Dixon to face Gregory and Hendry. The last-named accepted a return from Russell with three on the board. The wicket was inclined to be fiery, and wickets fell fast, the scoje at lunch being five for 49. Claude Ashton wjis caught in the slips off the first ball after the resumption after lunch. Gilligan and Perrin added 36 in 20 minutes in enterprising fashion, though Gilligan escaped an easy chance of being stumped early in the. innings. Both batsmen were hit by Gregory, Perrin receiving a Llow below the heart, necessitating his retirement. Ha displayed marked ability to handle Gregory's bowling, but Gilligan was uncertain, though he hit four boundaries before Gregory found his stumps. Perrin was able to resume his innings, and remained not out. The Essex innings, which lasted two and a-half hours, closed for 128. Bardsley and Collins opened for Australia, both scoring freely off Louden and Dixon. Collins lifted Smith for six, reaching his 50 in an hour. The century was posted immediately afterwards, and Bardsley then succumbed in Franklin's first over. He had eight fours in Ids total.

Macartney had only just reached double figures when he was sent back by Dixon. Collins and Andrews were missed daring their partnership, the latter particularly by Hubert Ashton at second slip.
