OBITUARY.

MR. J. R. CLIFF.

[BT TELEGRAPH. OWN COJiRESPONDZHTI.j PAPABOA, TfctundajMr. J. R. Cliff, a settler of many year**, standing, passed away in the early hcvra of this morning, after a sudden illness. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr. George Cliff. Ha came to the Dominion in 1362, with hta Darants. He married, in 1893, Miss Ebzabclh Wikon, the second daughter of the laic Mr. J. W. Wilson. Ho was a widely-known farroe* and stock-raiser. The late Mr. Cliff leavea a family of two sens and five daughters.

MAORI WAR VETERAN.

Another veteran of tie Maori war, Mr. Joseph Waddeil, has died at the Auckland Hospital, aged 87. Born at Carrickforgus. County Antrim, Ireland, in 1834, Mr. Waddeil enlisted in tho 12th Regiment in 1860, arriving with the regiment in Xow Zealand in 1861, in the ship Henry Feme}". During the next two years Mr. Waddeil was engaged with a party njakiDg reads in the Waikato. He participated in the fighting at Korohoe, o, Paparata, and wus with the flying column at Gate Pa, Tauranga. Subsequently be wa3 stationed at Napier and Taorang-a, and left tho service in 1867. Mr. WaddelL who was not married, entered the Veterans' Homo in 1917. Deceased will be accorded a military funeral, the interment taking place afc WaLkaraka Cemetery this afternoon.
