FOOTBALL.

THE RUGBY GAME. SPRINGBOKS AT GREY.MOUTH. AN EASY VICTORY. s THIRTY-THREE TO THREE. [bt telegraph—rßi;ss association."] GREYMOCTH, Wednesday. The Springboks defeated the Coast and Buller representatives to-day. by 33 points to 3. The weather was fine and the attendance about four thousand. A try by Weepener and three fine penalty goals by De ViUier3 made the half-tone score 12 to 0. Tries were scored in lie second spell by Zelier (31, Sendin and Mostert, and three were converted by De Viliiers.

The local forwards he.d their own in the first hah and in the loose until near the end, but there was no combination among the backs, who were weak in attack and defence. The accurate passing of the visiting backs led to all the trien but the last wh;eh resulted from a fine forward attack. The only local score was a penalty goal by Steel. Except in occasional loose rushes by the Coast forwards tins play was seldom in the Springboks' territoryThe Coast t?:ckling was poor a-nd the visitors had the better of the scrums, but the forwards in open work evened matters. Good defensive play by Ryan helped the Coast. Van Heerden twice got away. He was grassed once and later hurdled over the fallback and over the line, but failed to touch down. Townsend, Michau and Weepener were always prominent in the passing bouts. De ViUiers let nothing pass him. The scores are not a fair criterion of the first half but in the second spell the visitors' mastery was narked and grew a3 the play progressed. They worked the blind side of the scrum and scored twice in this way.

ADDITIONAL MATCH. PROTEST BY AUCKLAND UNION. The treatment accorded Auckland in the allocation of matches against the Springboks was discussed by the members of the Management Co>nmittee oi the Auckland liugby 0 nion last ovemng Mr. A. Bayiiss said that the Mayor of Wellington had asked the manager oi the South Africa n team it a return match could be played .igainst WelLiaigton. A match against the native team was being arranged for the same' place. The third test was to be played at Wellington and this maae four .matches to be played there, against two in Auckland. The New Zealand Union was certainly not helping Auckland. Mr. C. Ma'hieson said that ii the New Zealand Union agreed to play another match at Wellington it would make six matches for the .Wellington provincial district against three (including Rotorusd in the Auckland district. Tho New Zealand Union would not play the Springboks aga-iast South Auckland, but preferred to play Manawatu, which was defeated by South. Auckland. He thought more consideration should be shown to the Auckland district Auckland had a population half Jas great again as Wellington, and he was eure they would get as good a gate here at a mid-week match as they did at Wellington last Saturday. He would be in favour of giving Hamilton a match. He moved that a telegram be sent to the New Zealand Un:.on protesting against an additional match being played in Wellington. The motion was carr.ed. The Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union met last evening. Mr. H. Frost presided. It was decided that the return match, Auckland v. Thames, be played at Thames on August 13. The junior advisory board reported that several junior teams had not started their matches at Avondale to time, and in consequence the games finished late, and players who were on the ground early, and had to play against the late-comers missed their train back to town. It was decided that the practice would have to cease

THE LAST TEST MATCH. [BY TELE3RAPH—PB.ESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The New Ziealand Rugby Union has altered the date of the last test match in Wellington from September 3 to Septembe. 17. The South Africans do not leave until September 19, and it is unlikely they will' play in Sydney on their way back. This may involve an alteration in the Nelson-Marlborough match to September 3. The match against the Maoris may be played in Wellington. KOH.N SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND WINS TROPHY. The Rugby football match for the Kohn Shield was played between the Wellington Tramways (holders) and the Auckland Tramways at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, in tho presence oi about 2000 spectators. The visitors were defeated alter a close and exciting game by the narrow margin of three: points, an unconverted try to nil. Wellington attacked from the onset, and soon hail Auckland ;n difficulties From a scrum ii front of the goal Auckland cleared, but soon after the visiting backs again got going, and Auckland forced. From a line-out the local forwards broke through, but the ball was kicked too hard, and the Wellington ::"ullback found the line. Shortly afterwards the Auckland backs secured the ball from a scrum, and Fry made a good opening with a fine dodgy run, the threequarter line. Pollock. Ellice. and Shanaghan, taking part in a passing rush. Fry cut in again, and forced his way over near the corner. Webb's kick failed. Both side 3 now set a fast pace, the backs throwing the ball about well. Again and again the Wellington halfback, Moscline, set his backs going, but the ball frequently went astray. The local rearguard were also handling the ball well. Fry and Loveridge being' very prominent. Wellington kept up the attack, and finally GTegg gathered the ball up from the loose and forced his way over, but was brought back for infringing. Give-and-take play followed, and the Wellington forward* again had Auckland in difficulties. Bowe had a fine, shot at goal, but was unsuccessful. Wellington was getting tie ball from the scrums but Auckland's tackling was sound. Half-time sounded with no change in the scores. On resuming Auckland attacked strongly, the backs, working well, but could not increase their score. The Wellington forwards held their own in the Hose, but the backs spoiled many fine chances. Play was confined to the visitors' territory for the greater part of the second spel'. though their forwards several times broke through and seemed as though they would score. The game ended with Auckland- attacking strongly in front of Wellington's goal, the scores remaining: Auckland, 3; Wellington, 0. Mr. W. Meredith was referee.
