QUEENSLAND POLITICS.
I <•• LOCAL ELECTION PORTENT. LABOUR PARTY ROUTED. A. and N.Z. BRISBANE. July 26Later returns show that Labour suffered a crushing defeat at the local authority elections. The anti-Labour candidates captured approximately 500 seats to 30 secured by the Labour candidates. In all the cities and larger towns every Labour candidate was defeated, and where they were successful in the smaller boroughs ' it was only by the narrowest of majorities. The Premier, commenting on this, attributed the defeat to the apathy of Labour supporters, who evidently thought the pettifogging affairs of local government could safely be left in the hands of Tory politicians. The Nationalist leader claims that the result is practically a vote of no confidence in the Government.
