TOLL-GATES QUESTION.
INQUIRY BY DEPARTMENT, VIEWS OP LOCAL BODIES. [BX XELEOBAFH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH. Tuesday. • The committee of engineers of th# Public Works Department which has been appointed to inquire into the application of various local bodies in TaranakJ for permission to erect toll-gates eat hero to-day. The members of the committee are Messrs. 6. T. Murray, inspecting engineer, H. H. Sharp, staff engineer, and T. M. Ball, district engineer. The order of reference is as follows: — (1) In what manner have conditions now altered that special action is considered necessary in regard to the upkeep of roads; (2) what special action is now advocated; (3) what are the alternatives? Representatives of local bodies mado statements setting out various points of) view in regard to toll-gates. The local County Council's case was in favour of toll-gates as a means of providing revenue for the upkeep of roads. This was challenged by the Borough Council and tba Chamber of Commerce on the ground thati toll-gates were retrogressive, and if all local' bodies adopted them the Dominion! would be barricaded with gates. An inj crease in the subsidy to local bodies and I a tyre tax were suggested as alternative i sources of revenue.
