Keen interest was evinced bv the spectators m the fast same between Whangarei and J auranga, both of whom played well and kept the excitement high. Shortly aiier the opening Masscy scored a goal for Whangarei from a hot attack, centreing well from the wing. Even play was maintained until F. bimmonds evened up matters by a score from a penalty corner. From play round the " hsifigarei goal F. Sunmonds essayed a shot which however, hit the post. A massing rush by.the Whan garei line was broken up by It. Simmond-s. and as McDcnald tried to beat the Whangarei defence the backs cleared well. Play up and down the field followed, and from a scramble at the Whangarei goal g. Simmonds failed to net the ball. The Kev. McCutcheon tried repeatedly to beat the opposing backs, but the Whangarei dele nee was sure. Resumption of play after the interval found Tauranga pressing, and Edwards playing with one hand, was lucky spoiling more of his chances. The Whangarei back. Sloane, did some good 5»? m° r aide, and fed His halves well. Ihe Tauranga goalkeeper was then called* upon for some fast work, but he proved quite safe. From a good attack Simmonds net but it was disallowed for sticks. ' P. From the bully-off fi"anklin forced the pace, but Rodney turned the play, and Goertz stored a goal. From a corner Morrison found the Franklin net. but an offside ruling spoiled his effort. The Franklin forwards then took the ball -to the Rodney circle, but R. Civil, the sure defence of the white side, cleared the ball and his forwards maintained play at the Franklin end long enough to take several unsuccessful shots at goal. Another Franklin attack found Croker a reliable back. The Franklin backs were no less solid in resisting another rush, and play continued at the Rodney twenty-five yards line for some While. R. Powdrill scored a goal shortly before halftime. In the second spell Conroy got away well with the ba-11, but the Rodney fullbacks stopped the effort, though they were kept very busy by the Franklin attackers, who had several ' unsuccessful shot-S at the net. Rodney returned to the offensive, and 0. Civil centred to Davis, who scored a goal. Another score was added by O. Civil, and a. minute later R. Powdrill made the total up to five.
