APPEAL BY PRISONER.
SUPREME COURT SENTENCE.

The Court -of Appeal was occupied today in hearing an appeal against the sentence of 12 mouths' imprisonment with hard labour passed by Mr. Justice Salmoiid on Henry Richard Jeffcry on July 13. The prisoner had stolen a mate % post office savings biiik book and forged the name of the owner of the book. Mr. Moody, for the prisoner, contended that the sntence passed was out of all proportion to the crime. The probation office, he said, had le-ommended proba tion. bet the Judae had refused to look at the report of the probation <ifß'-»T. The j <ase. he staid, was clearly one for mercy j ioid the granting of prohaUon. Mr. VV. C. K.C, contended I that the Appeal Court was not in the same position to judge the matter as a •Tudgc ;n the Supremo Gmrt. In any case, he said this was a case involving de'iberatf dishonesty. The sentence, he said. wa_- substantial, but was deserved. The Court reserved its decision.
