The police then ascertained that a man answering the description of the wanted person had been seen near the racecourse before rind after the bur-

glary. A systematic search of the course and the near vicinity was instituted. The first important discovery was»the finding o{ a "swag" in one of the ticket boxes. After further lengthy and carefui search a price ticket off on e of the stolen articles was found. Nothing more being located the constables decided they would have to look elsewhere. Before so, however, Constable Sutton investigated the contents of a heap of leaves and paper, and Constable Claasen was watching the operation. The latter was sitting on his keels idly swinging his hands to and fro when, to his surprise, he found his hands in passing over .the turf had slightly raised a loose sod. When he raised the sod he found the stolen jewellery wrapped in an old shirt. The articles vv e re intact with the exception of one watch which was missing. As a result of the police investigations a man who was arrested on a charge of vagrancy on the afternoon of the burglary, and is now on remand on that charge, will, it is understood bo charged with committing the burglary.
