THE WITITE HORSE CUP.

OPFNTNG OF TOURNAMENT. The sixth annual country week tournament for the White Horse Cup was commenced yesterday at the Remuera hockey grounds and will be continued each afternoon until concluded. Six entries have been received and four teams played yesterday. Fine weather, with a coldness in the atmosphere that encouraged fast play, was experienced and the ground was, in sood condition. The match between Thames and Rodney was a good game, with honours equal at first, but the Thames team, especially the backs, failed to maintain their dash and combination, and Rodnev. playing well, won by 5 goals to 0. The match between Tauranga and Bay oi Plenty was a fast, exciting struggle from start to finish and resulted in a draw, each side scoring one goal. The teams in the competition are:— Whangarei.—J. MANAGERS. The annual meeting of managers of country teams competing in the White Horse Cup tournament was held yesterday morning Mr. H. B. Speight (Auckland Hockey Association) presided. There were also present: Messrs L. H Norton and L C. Kent (Auckland). A. C. Bourgious (Whangarei), P, W. Smith (Rodney), M. J. Fogarty (Bay of Plenty). A. W. Danby (Thames), A. F. Leslie (lauranga). The following colours were registered :—Franklin, red and black hoops; Bay of Plenty, black and white hoops; Tauranga. black jersey with white monogram; Rodney, white; Thames, black and blue hoops; Whangarei, black jersey with broad gold band. Consideration was given to the disposition of the Captain White Cup, future dates of the tournament, and the number of players to be registered for each team, but a decision in each case was until the adjourned meeting on Friday next. THAMES V. RODNEY. In the Thames-Rodney match Buchan wa.% quick to take advantage of the bully, and carried the bail to Rodney's goal, where it. Civil saved. Another rush by the Thames forwards was stopped by the same player, and the ball was taken by O. Civil, on thtright wing, to the Thames goal. The attach was stopped by R. Civil, and the Rodnev forwards took the ball to the Thames goal, and O. Civil had a shot, which was spoiled by Powdrill being offside. Thames made u swift attack on the Rodney goal, but R. Civil again proved safe. A rush by Rodney was. blocked by Briggs, and the play wa.i again taken to Rodney's goal, where Rennio saved well. Half-time sounded shortly afterwards. When play resumed the Thames backs did some good defensive work. Eyeton sent the ball to Goertz on the left wing, who ehot a goal from a difficult- angle. Fronr- the bully Thames attacked, but Croker cleared from his own goal and bit the ball to half-way, where Eyeton took it to" the Thames net and scored. Later play centred round the Thames goal, where O. . TAURANGA V. BAY OF PLENTY. The Tauranga-Bay of Plenty match was fast and even. From the. bully-off Tauranga pressed the attack, and gave tho Bay of Plenty backs an opportunity of shoeing some good defensive play. Beed was prominent in stopping the ball and Tabb and Baker were reliable men, the latter especially playing a conspicuously safe game. Tauranga attacked., and from play in the circle F. Simmonda, the centre forward found the net. Even play continued until naif-tune. In the second spell Bay -?i Plenty were first on the attack, a shot by Kelly just missing the net. From a stron" attack by Tauranga Tabb saved, and the play was taken to the other end. where the backs proved themselves reliable men. The Tauranga backs worked hard for some time, G. Simmonds showing to pSTticular advantage. The Bay of Plenty line was pressing hard wnen the centre forward found the net a few minutes before the end of the game making the scores 1 all. Mr. L. Tho results of Saturday's matches give St. Luiie's the lead in the senior competitvsn, one point ahead of Areta, who have played one same more than the former team.
