FRANCE AND AUSTRALIA
TRADE CONFERENCE SOUGHT.
AMBASSADOR MEETS MR. HUGHES. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Becd. 11.80 p.m.) LONDON, July 6 Mr. W. M. Hughes was to-day visited by the French Ambassador, M. De Saint-Aulaire, who desired to know when it would be convenient for Mr. Hughes to visit the Somme area. He expressed the French nation's regrets that Mr. Hughes will be unable to participate in the national celebrations and commemorations next week. M. De Saint-Aulaire also intimated that the French Government desired to discuss matters of commerce, especially in relation to the Australian tariff. He expressed some doubt whether the matter should be approached through Britain, but Mr. Hughes quicksdisillusioned him bv Saying that the matter was entirely an Australian concern, and he would be glad to go fully into all questions, but he would be unable t-o attend to them or to visit/ France while the Conference of Prime Ministers continned.
