THE SENIOR COMPETITION.

MOUNT EDEN A DEFEATS ARETA,

The third rounds o£ the Auckland Hockey Association's senior competitions was played at Eemuera and Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather. The grounds -were in capital order, and resulted in some very fast hockey. A largo number of enthusiasts were present to watch tho Areta-Mount Eden A match, as it was popular opiniou that last year's champions were to be fully extended. However, Mount Eden A defeated Areta by 2 goals to 0. Somervell and University played a drawn Same, each scoring 2 goals. Edendale had their first win .this season by defeating Mount Eden B by 4 goals" to 1. At Victoria Park St. Luke's proved victorious North Shore, winning by 3 goals to 1. Tho positions of the teams are:—Mount Eden A. 6 points; Areta. St. Luke's, 4; University, Somervell, 3; North Shore, Edendale. 2; Mount Eden B, 0.

MOUNT*EDEN A V. ARETA. From the opening bully Areta gained the advantage, till Wheeler sent them back. Areta worked clear, and Somers and Moginie further improved matters. but Jarman stopped cleverly, and reueved. Areta. however, by a good forward run. with Robertshaw ana Hariand prominent, reached the circle, but a breach pulled them up. Areta kept up the pressure until McLeod cleared to the side line. Mount Eden now started off with a good rush, which penetrated the <tetence Baxter, m goal, finaily saving. Flay changed quickiy from end to end, until a an© piece of work by Brinsden put Areta m a good position, but Horspool proved quite sate. Mount Eden now took a hand, and had Areta on the defensive, good play by Bishop pulling them up on two occasions. Mount Eden had a little the better, ot the play fop some time, and the Areta tLefence was severely tested, Ellison and .Baxter both getting in some fine defensive rfi" , H - ard hitting was spoiling many likely chances, and combination was lacking in both teams. Buildon soon afterwards set his forwards in motion, and a fine rush by Hariand. Moginie, and Somers was nicely stemmed by Johns, who sent Mount Eden away, but Bnnsden. who was getting in very clever and spectacular stick work, was the stumbling block. Mount Eden returned to the attack, and gave the opposing backs a strenuous time defending but the tatter rose to the occasion, and cleared play to midfield when the whistle went for halftime, no score having being made On resuming Mount Eden broke away, and Alexander reached the circle. However, the defence proved sound, and Jarman brought relief by sending the ball well up the field. The Mount EdeH van now indulged in the best movement of the game. The Alexander Brothers worked the ball through to the circle wkere H. Alexander secured, and opened Mount Eden's score with a fine shot. The latter team were showing better combination, but hard hitting was far too frequent; Areta now livened up and went through the Mount Eden defence, but Harland's shot went outs.de. Mount Eden worked play to the other end, and a score seemed imminent, when Alexander got away on his own. He be3t the fullbacks and had only Baxter, to pass, but tho latter rose to the occasion and saved a very dangerous situation. Mount Eden were, soon back again, and. a fine rush ended in Brnkin scoring with a good shot. Immediately afterwards. Mount Eden were again attacking, and A. Alexander sent in another shot which went well over the goal. Mount Eden were now h-ving the better of the play and some time elapsed before ATeta could shake them off, good defensive work by Brinsden snd England being the outstanding feature. Eventually Areta broke away, and the, van, workng well, reached the circle, but Moginie failed to register from rn easy chance. Areta kept up the pressure and forced two corners in succession, but failed to push home their advantage. Mount Eden had cleared to midfield when time was called. Mount Eden 2 Areta 0 Mr. R. SOMERVELL.V. UNIVERSITY University won the bully, but Simpson," at centre half, intercepted, and set his forwards going, Claudet beiag stopped by Speight, who sent play- to midfield. University gained the advantage, and a good run by Burton on the left reached the circle, a corner resulting. After another attack by University, Somervell set off. the- Watts Brothers doing good work; when in a good position they sent across to Claudet on' the left, but-ofis de play spoiled their advantage. University cleared and Scherer and .Grice further improved matters, carrying on to Munro, who cleared to midfield." Somervell now _ set up a strong attack, the forwards rushing play to the' circlfe, arid •from a scramble, a shot just missed the goal. Uni- : ve-sity now took a hand at attacking, Grice, -Scherer ? and Carr getting:away in a good rush to the opposite twenty-five," where Munro again brought relief." University returned to the attack and Burton, after making a splendid run down the left, centred well to Grice, whose shot just missed, the net. Play remained very even ' till half-time, with no score to either side. University started off from bully, but George sent them back, and a fine forward rush ended in Newsham securing and opening the score for SomervelL University were not long, in evening up • matters. A determined attack followed immediately, and from a scrarable the ball came out to Burton who transferred to Scherer, the latter scoring with an excellent;'shot. With the scores level, both teams made strenuous efforts to gain the lead. Grice-later broke away from a twenty-five bully and passed to Carr. who managed to/score another, goal for University. Thi3 reverse roused SomorvelL Watts and Newsham broke away. - the ball reaching the circle, where Fawcet saved in good style. University now indulged, in some good concerted movements, with Grice and Scherer prominent, and had Somervell hard pressed for some minutes. Somervell at last broke through. Newsham. who was playing well, passed to H. Watts, who raced lor the circle. A fine movement ended in the latter player evening up. the - scores. Play.now became fast and exciting, opportunities of scoring being lost by both sides. The whistle blew soon afterwards, the game ending in a draw; -"'-'.' NORTH SHORE V. ST. LUKE'S. North' Shore started off from the bully and carried play we'll up the field. Steele intercepting and returning to midfield. North Shore returned to the attack, and Merriweather lost a good- chance of scoring. Keeping up the pressure, things looked bad for St. Lake's until McLeod brought relief, and sent his forwards in a good rush. Williams and, Dickson, on the left, improved the position.- the ball eventually going over to Rich., who scored from the edge of the circle with an extremely lucky shot. Although North Shore had the odd goal against them." they were having the better of the game, and had St. Luke's backs har-1 on the defensive for some minutes. McLeod finally cleared for St. Luke's, and the van carried play to North Shore's twenty-five. St. Luke's now got going, and set up a solid attack, the North Shore defence being severely tested, a breach in the circle making matters worse. From the penalty corner Garrard . accepted, - and found the net. Working well together St. Luke'SiWere again pressing hard, and in a very short time Williams had added another coal to his side's tally. North Shore could not shake off their opponents, and St. Luke's went very close to adding a further.score The backs cleared, and .a fine piece of play ended in Foster opening the score for North Shore. Play was fairly even until half-time: St. Luke's, 3: North Shore. 1. Upon resuming, North Shore showed to advantage in some fine attacks, but they were met with sound defence play by the St. Luke's rear division. The latter managed to clear, and play was rushed to the other end. North Shore iaving their turn on the defensive, two or three chances .of scoring being missed by the poor shooting .of the St. Luke's van. Play now became very even the ball going from end to end ift fast time. North Shore just failed to add to their score. McLeod intercepting m the nick of time. EDENDALE V. MOUNT EDEN B. After a brief attack from the bully by Mount Eden B, their opponents gained the upper-hand, and in quick succession J arisen had two shots at goal. Edendale kept up the pressure, chances of scoring beijag numerous. At last Mount Eden, after a spell on the defence, worked play to the other end, but Hill and Emery saved well, Edendale now -started a .great passing rush. Rioketts, Preston, Davis, and Paice, handling in succession, reached the circle, where Preston was handy and scored. Mount Eden now livened up, the van getting away in a nice movement that ended in Malcolm;having ah .unsuccessful shot.
