THE METROPOLITAN "AREA. TOTAL POPULATION 158,389INCREASE '18.80 PER CENT. The census returns vfor the town district of New Lynn, which-are now available, complete the figures for the Auckland metropolitan area. The New Lynn total is 1389, making the grand total for the metropolitan area, 158,389. The total, at the 1916 census was 133,315. Thus this ctensus shows an inorease of 25,074, or 18.80 per cent. New t Lynn town district is within the Titirangi riding of the Waitemata County. The total for the remainder of the riding, which lies beyond the metropolitan area, is 654, as against 411 at the last enumeration, an increase of 59.12 per cent. The total for the riding, including New Lynn, is therefore 2043, against 1452 in 1916, an increase of 591. A return has been received for ihe islands of the Hauraki Gulf, including Mokohinan lighthouse. The population totals 452 males, and 367 females, a grand total for tho outlying islands of 819.
