SINN FEIN MOVE FOR PEACE.

©BOPPING REPUBLICANISM.

ELECTION TRUCE SOUGHT.

POSITION THOUGHT BETTER. By Tokeraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received 8.10 p.m.) Tunos. LONDON, May 11. The Sum Fein is prepared to abandon its claim for au independent republic if granted fiscal autonomy. A strong peace movement is making prepress. Do Valera's. agents are visiting London to explore the possibilities of suggesting a truce on the basis that the troops .ind the Black and Tans are to be confined to barracks during the elections. The Government in reply asks what assurance will be forthcoming that the trace will not be used for reorganising the Sinn Fein forces. A fn.irly hopeful opinion prevails in Government circles. It is not suggested t'nat the truce would affect the elections, in win' h Sinn Feiners are certain to be returned -jnoppoFed in nearly all the electorates, but it is bt*tieved that once peace is re-established, tho people will insist on its retortion.

MENTION FOR DUBLIN SEE.

Australian and N.Z Cable Aeaociation. (Rood. 5.40 p.m.) LONDON. May 11.

It is believed that the name of Dr. Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne, has been included in the list which a meeting of Irish archbishops and bishops is submitting to the Pope from which to select a new Archbishop of Dublin.

A large number of Irish bishops and priests came to London and entertained Dr. Mannix at luncheon prior to his departure for Australia on Saturday. The priests presented Archbishop Maimix with gifts, including vestments.

Archbishop Mannix. replying, said the Britisn Government had ■ endeavoured to put the Irish people in one camp and the Lishops and priests in another, but all were united. He was not allowed to visit Ireland because he refused to do the Government's work there. The Government, in asking him to do its work, backed the wrong horse. He was taking a message to Australia that everything he had said or done before or since he left Australia regarding Ireland was endorsed 1 by the cardinalate, archbishops, and priests. He would be able to tell Australia that the crimes and outrages in Ireland must not be placed to the discredit of the Irish people. England could have peace in Ireland in a day by ceasing British crime and British aggression. The Irish people were asking nothing but what they were entitled to. They were asking for self-determination, to which all nations, great or small, were entitled.
