STEAMER IN QUARANTINE. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 24. The steamer. Wonganelia, from Batavia, has been quarantined with a case of smallpox on board. STANDING HIGH JUMP RECORD. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 24. At an athletic meeting at Auburn, A. W. Winter, in the standing high jump, cleared 4ft 9|in. This is a record for ' Australia and New Zealand. HONOUR FOR SIR -JOHN MONASH. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, April 24. The degree of Doctor of Engineering has been conferred on General Sir John Monash. This is the first occasion of the conferring of this degree by the Melbourne University. COLOCJRED HEN AS SEAMEN. (Reed. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 24. The Federated Seamen's Union has called a "stop-work" meeting for Tuesday to discuss the subject of the admission of coloured seamen to the union. This is the result of a recent utterance by the general secretary, Mr. Walsh, that if 2000 Chinese applied for membership they would be admitted.
